Ishtar Gate & New Year Celebration
Host Ryan Gable will be reviewing recent current events, discussing nutrition in the new year and then welcoming Clyde Lewis, host of the popular radio program Ground Zero to discuss the year in review, and his unique paranormal, parapolitical take on current events.
Ryan will also be discussing in the final hour the ancient Akitu Festival of Mesopotamian origin. We celebrate our New Year based on a calendar system rather than the changing of the seasons. February marks Imbolc on the Wheel of the Year. Also known as Candlemas, the festival celebrates the birth of the new year and blooming of flowers. The Celts celebrated their new year on the day after Samhain, November 1st, also known as the Witch’s New Year.
The Akitu festival was a twelve day ceremony beginning at the first New Moon after the Spring Equinox in March/April. The intent of the ritual was to humble the king and remind him of his role in serving the chief god Marduk and the community. The head priest would strip the king of his regalia and slap him hard in the face. It was believed that if the King teared up, Marduk approved him to be king for another year. This celebration re-enacted the victory of Marduk over the forces of destruction known as Tiamat. The festival began when a great procession, including the king, members of his court, priests, and statues of the gods passed through the Ishtar Gate and along the way to the Akitu temple, which was dedicated to Marduk. During the middle of the festival, the king was to face a trial. He was greeted by the high priest before temporarily stripping him of his crown and royal insignia. The king was then dragged to the image of Bel, in front of whom he was required to kneel. The king was to pray for forgiveness and to promise that he had not been neglectful his duties to god or people. The slapping of the king and his tears was to ensure approval of his rulership from the gods and to remind him to stay humble in focusing on his duties towards these gods and of his people.
